Defragment your hard drive to Speed Up your PC

No comments:

Your disk stores a file's data in one or more chunks of space on the physical disk, regardless of whether the space is contiguous. De-fragging tidies everything up and blocks a program's bits together so that the reader heads don't have to shuttle back and forth to read a whole executable or data file. While this is less of a problem with today's huge hard drives and copious RAM, a slow system can still benefit from de-fragmenting the disk.

Windows 7 comes with a built-in defragger that runs automatically at scheduled intervals. Mine was set by default to run Wednesdays at 1:00 AM, when my PC is usually turned off; so it never got defragged. If you're in a similar boat, you can either change the scheduled defrag, or defrag on demand. Just type "defrag" in the Windows Start Menu search bar, and click on "Disk Defragmenter." The version of the utility is improved in Windows 7, and shows more information about what's happening on your disk than Vista did. The Windows 7 engineering team posted a very in-depth, informative article on the Engineering Windows 7 blog.

Windows media player -Server Execution failed- Solved
Today I got trouble, playing windows media player 12 (Running on Windows 7). First I troubleshoot by installing and uninstalling windows media player. But unfortunately nothing works for me. Then I simply did the following thing to work like a charm…
Follow and Enjoy…Windows 7 Ultimate…

I would like to confirm if WMP can load from C:\Program Files\Windows Media Player\wmplayer.
To further troubleshooting, please perform the following steps:
Rename the WMP networking information folder
====================================
1. Close Windows Media Player.
2. Click the Start Button, type "%userprofile%\appdata\local\Microsoft\Windows Media" (without quotation marks) in the Search Box and press Enter.
3. In the open folder, right-click the folder 12.0 and choose Rename. Rename the folder to 12.0.bak.
Register the WMP components
==================
1. Close Windows Media Player and any other windows.
2. Click Start, All Programs, Accessories
3. Right click "Command Prompt" and choose "Run as administrator", accept the UAC prompt.
4. Type the following commands and press Enter after each line.
regsvr32 jscript.dll
regsvr32 vbscript.dll
exit
Set WMP default
===============
1. Click the Start Button, choose Default Program in the right pane.
2. Choose Set your default programs.
3. Click Windows Media Player in the Programs pane.
4. Click Set this program as default, and then click Choose default for this program.
If the issue persists, please try repairing the system as below:
In-Place upgrade (Repair install)
===========
1. Start the computer by using the current Operating System.
2. Insert the Windows 7 DVD in the computer's DVD drive.
3. Use one of the following procedures, as appropriate:
If Windows automatically detects the DVD, the Install now screen appears. Click Install now.
If Windows does not automatically detect the DVD, follow these steps:
a. Click the Start Button, type Drive:\setup.exe in the start search box and then click OK.
Note: Drive is the drive letter of the computer's DVD drive.
b. Click Install now.
4. When you reach the "Which type of installation do you want?" screen, click Upgrade.

How to create Autorun.inf file for CDs and DVDs.

1 comment:

Contrary to what you may have heard from the RIAA, burning a CD-R or CD-RW is not an activity restricted only to music pirates. In many business situations, the burned CD is the best way to distribute information to a target audience. For communications involving PowerPoint presentations, HTML, PDF forms, Flash animations, or a number of other applications, the portable and durable CD has become a common delivery method.

The compact disk drive auto play feature, common to most operating systems, is a good way to simplify user experience. Auto play is controlled by a simple text-only file called autorun.inf. While there are dozens of software utilities available that will help you create the file, all you really need is a text editor and some basic knowledge.

This How do I… is based on Microsoft Windows, but other operating systems will read the autorun.inf file in a similar fashion.

Solution One: Create autorun.inf

The basic configuration of the autorun.inf states the program to run when the CD is inserted in the drive and the icon to display when the disk is viewed by Windows Explorer or other directory listing software. The text-only file, which resides in the root directory of the CD, should follow this pattern:

[autorun]
open=myprogram.exe
icon=myicon.ico

The icon file should also reside in the root directory of the CD.

Variations

Often the program you want to run will not be located in the root directory of the CD. If that is the case you must include the path:

[autorun]
open=folder1\folder1A\myfile.exe
icon=myicon.ico

Sometimes you may need to pass an argument to the program to be auto played:

[autorun]
open=myprogram.exe /argument
icon=myicon.ico

Not a program

Sending customers, salespeople, investors, and employees presentations, PDF files, and HTML documents requires a slight variation to the basic autorun.inf file and the addition of a DOS batch file to the CD root directory. The autorun.inf file opens a batch file, which then opens the file using the default program designated for that file type. For example:

[autorun]
open=autorun.bat index.htm
icon=myicon.ico

And the autorun.bat file reads:

echo off
@start %1 %2 %3 %4 %5 %6 %7 %8 %9
@exit

There is a variation on this idea that takes advantage of the ShellExecute command:

[autorun]
ShellExecute=index.htm
icon=training.ico

Using the autorun.inf file to auto play your burned CDs will prevent another headache for your users and increase the likelihood of reaching your target audience. And because it is a simple text file, it can be created with a text editor and your normal disk-burning software.

Solution Two: Create autorun.inf

While creating your autorun.inf file according to Solution One will work for most of your users, it will fail for a small percentage who have issues with the autorun function in their particular installation of Windows. The batch file in the first solution makes no allowances for errors and will merely fail when an error is encountered.

This is where a shell utility can save the day, because these third-party applications contain routines for handling common errors and will complete the autorun process even if an error is encountered. For this example, we’ll use autorun.exe, which can be downloaded from Tarma Software Research. Tarma has made autorun.exe freely available for both personal and commercial use, and there are no requirements for copyright notices, etc.

To use autorun.exe, you make a simple modification to the autorun.inf file by replacing autorun.bat with the .exe file. The basic autorun.inf under this scenario would look like this:

[autorun]
open=autorun.exe index.htm
icon=myicon.ico

The only other requirement is that a copy of the 8KB autorun.exe file be included in the root directory of each burned CD. This application also contains several options and supports an extended autorun.inf structure that provides more flexibility in how you design your CD package.

Delete keylogger with ease..

No comments:

Keyloggers :-

Keystroke logging (often called keylogging) is a method of capturing and recording user keystrokes. The technique and name came from before the era of the graphical user interface; loggers nowadays would expect to capture mouse operations too. Keylogging can be useful to determine sources of errors in computer systems, to study how users interact and access with systems, and is sometimes used to measure employee productivity on certain clerical tasks. Such systems are also highly useful for both law enforcement and law-breaking—for instance, providing a means to obtain passwords or encryption keys and thus bypassing other security measures. Keyloggers are widely available on the Internet.

There are currently two types of keylogging methods, hardware and software based.

For more Keyloggers click here.

--------

Since these files have been quarantined, it is as good as their not being present in the system.

There is no way these files can be executed again. To protect your system from such loggers permanently, it is advisable that you use `Real Time Protection' software such as the MS Anti Spyware tool. This will prevent loggers and spyware from entering your system.

Spyware Doctor also has the Real Time Protection feature, but it is not enabled till you pay and become a registered user.

So, for now, it will detect the loggers only when you run it. MS Anti Spyware is totally free with realtime-protection enabled.

You can download it from this URL: http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/software/default.mspx

Reformatting Windows xp

No comments:

Usually in Windows 2000/XP Operating system, you get the registered information by right-clicking "My computer" and clicking Properties.

That will display only Product ID and not the Product Key (CD-Key). The product key is required when you install the Windows operating system.

Normally this is affixed in the Product CD case itself.

If you have lost the Product key information, the next option to find the installed product key is to just use some third-party tools to get this information. One of the freeware utilities available to do this is "ProduKey" (37 KB Size) available at this URL: http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/product_cd_key_viewer.html/

Please Unzip the ProduKey.zip file and double-click the file produkey.exe.

It displays the Product ID and the CD-Key of Windows (2000/XP/2003), MS-Office XP, Exchange Server, and SQL Server installed on your computer or for another operating system/computer - by using command-line options.

Next, it is a good idea to back up your installed drivers before you re-install your operating system.

After you re-install the windows operating system, you can just simply restore the system drivers from the previous backup. You can use third-party tools to backup and restore your system drivers. One of the freewares available to do this is "Double Driver".

Using Double Driver, you can view which drivers are installed in your system and you can backup the drivers you choose, save and print the driver's list, and more.

Double Driver may be downloaded from the following URL:http://www.majorgeeks.com/Double_Driver_d4802.html - dd100.exe (Size 1.37 MB).

To backup your existing settings, you can use The Files and Settings Transfer Wizard of Windows XP.

The Files and Settings Transfer Wizard helps you transfer files and settings from your old computer to your new one.

You can bring up this wizard in two ways. One is to click Start - Programs - Accessories - System Tools - Files and Settings Transfer wizard.

The other way is to use your Windows XP installation CD. To do this, please insert the Windows XP setup CD and browse to the path Support\Tools folder. Double-click the file fastwiz.exe.

This will bring up the wizard. Be sure to quit any other open programs before you use the Files and Settings Transfer Wizard.

For more information about how to use Files and Settings Transfer Wizard, please look up http://www.winsupersite.com/showcasewindowsxp_sg_fstw.asp/

Please note that after you use the wizard to migrate program settings, programs that require passwords may no longer work properly, or may prompt you for a password that you previously saved.

This behaviour is by design. This is a security feature that protects your passwords.

To work around this behaviour, please save your passwords in your programs after you migrate your programs.

This wizard can also transfer settings for third-party programs.

Note that the wizard does not transfer or install the actual programs, it only transfers the settings for the programs.

In order for these settings to take effect on the Windows XP-based computer, the programs must be installed on the target computer before you migrate the settings.

To access Disk Cleanup tool, click start - Programs - Accessories - System Tools - Disk Cleanup. One of the sophisticated freeware tools, CCleaner (Size 1.42 MB) can be downloaded from http://www.filehippo.com/download_ccleaner/. Once a week you can clean your unwanted files.

Windows XP loads a lot of services that the user most likely does not need. So we have to manually disable unnecessary services. To do this, please click Start - Run - type "services.msc". To determine which services you may disable, please visit http://majorgeeks.com/page.php?id=12 for information about Windows XP services. Disable "Background Intelligent Transfer Service" and check whether this improves your boot-up time.

Disk Defragmenter is a tool designed to reorganise the data on your hard disk so that your computer runs more efficiently. Click Start - Run - type "dfrg.msc". This will bring up the Disk Defragmenter.

Make sure your system is free from spywares. Spywares may hamper your computer's performance. Install Anti-spyware tools such as Ad-Aware SE Personal 1.06 http://www.majorgeeks.com/download506.html (2.7 MB) Or SpyBot Search & Destroy http://www.snapfiles.com/get/spybot.html (4.9 MB). Also, please make sure that your anti-virus definitions are up-to-date.

Fine-tune your startup programs. One of the freeware tools "Startup Controller Panel" (standalone EXE version size 34kb) allows you to easily configure which programs run when your computer starts. This can be downloaded from http://www.mlin.net/StartupCPL.shtml.

Uninstall and remove any unnecessary or unused programs from the Add/Remove Programs section of the Control Panel.

If you have installed two operating systems (Dual-boot), you can edit the time Windows XP displays the choice page. The default is 30 seconds and this may reduce to, say, 8 seconds. To do this, please right-click My computer - Click Properties - Advanced tab - Startup and Recovery button - Settings - Time to display list of operating systems.

In BIOS Boot sequence section, change the "First Boot Device" setting to Hard disk (instead of CD-ROM/floppy).

This copy of Windows is not genuine

No comments:

Microsoft is now becoming more advanced in its attack on pirated versions of Windows XP or Microsoft Office. The company is including a Windows Genuine Advantage security patch in the updates of Windows XP. This new patch produces pop-ups on the login screen and on the desktop explaining that this version of Windows XP is not genuine and the owner may be the victim of software counterfeiting.

To help determine whether the copy of Windows installed on your computer is genuine, please visit

http://www.microsoft.com/genuine. The Windows Validation Assistant performs a check on a user's computer to determine if the Windows operating system installed on his/her computer was installed using a valid product key.

Depending on the result of the validation, a success or failure page is displayed.

If Windows XP-based computers that were installed by using a Volume Licence product key might

be marked as non-genuine, then follow this URL: and if

your Windows licence is OEM XP version, then refer to this URL:

http://forums.microsoft.com/Genuine/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=638811&SiteID=25

If your version of Windows XP is not genuine and does not pass the validation schemes, you will

not be able to download security patches from Windows Update, or install the latest version of

Internet Explorer 7 and other software.

Even though some of the cracks and workarounds (to bypass or remove WGA or Windows Genuine Advantage) are available on the Internet, it is strongly recommended to buy a legal version of Windows XP or Windows XP (Home or Pro) Edition licence kit. The Windows Genuine Advantage Kit for Windows XP will include a new 25-character Product Key and a Windows Product Key Update tool that will allow customers to convert their counterfeit copy to genuine Windows XP.

If you have a Legal copy of Windows XP but your computer still fails validation, please follow these steps:

Your computer may not be properly configured to allow the validation process to get completed. Login your system as administrator or a member of administrator group. First check the following link, Microsoft Genuine Advantage - Diagnostic Site

http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/diag/.

This will check your computer's configuration and fix any problems that may exist. After checking for problems, you can click on the link to validate Windows. You may directly download and run the WGA Diagnostic Tool:http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012

Another reason for validation failing may be the Windows Genuine Advantage Validation Tool has been disabled.

Please follow the steps below to make sure the ActiveX is enabled:

Open Internet Explorer - Click Tools - Internet Options - Programs tab - Manage Add-ons button. Find the Windows Genuine Advantage Validation Tool and click on it. Verify the Add-on is enabled, if it is not, then please Click Enable and Ok twice to exit back to Internet Explorer. Close Internet Explorer and reopen it. Now try to validate Windows again.

For more information, please refer Windows Genuine Advantage Problems and Solutions at these URLs:

Windows XP installation problem

No comments:
When you are installing windows xp you might get some error message like this..
The error message is: " STOP: 0x00000050 PAGE_fault_in_non_paged_area"
HTML clipboard

During Windows XP installation, this error message may occur when one or more of RAM memory modules that are installed on your computer are faulty. To get rid of this problem, you will have to remove one of your RAMs and restart your Windows XP setup.

Please note that the recommended RAM to run Windows XP is 128 MB. The minimum is 64 MB, and the maximum is 4 GB. In your case, the installed memory is 256 MB. It may be two RAM modules installed, each of 128 MB, in your system. So first remove one of the RAM modules and then run the setup program. If you again receive the error message, please replace the RAM module you just removed, and restart the setup process again. Or try to install the RAM in a different memory slot. You have to do this exercise until you isolate the specific memory module that is not working correctly.

Another option to identify the faulty RAM is to make use of some third party memory testing tools. Following are some memory testing tools.

Importance of Digital Signature

1 comment:

A digital signature helps to keep a document that is transmitted electronically authentic - meaning HTML clipboard the recipient of the document knows who has created it, and is also assured that there have been no alterations to the document after it left the sender.

The digital signature used by the sender of the document `encrypts' or locks the document. He uses keys to encrypt it. Only the authorised recipient, who has the appropriate key to the document, can open it once he receives it. Software takes care of the digital signature processes.

For more information on how a digital signature keeps a document tamper-proof, please look up this URL: http://computer.howstuffworks.com/

Connecting computers without HUB

1 comment:

f you have more than two computers to be networked, you can install two Ethernet cards...

If both computers have Ethernet adapters, and you're not using a hub, switch, or router to connect the PCs, you can use an Ethernet cross-over cable. It is possible to connect the PCs through crossover cable. (To know more about cross-over cable, you can look up this URL: http://www.conniq.com/Glossary_C.htm).

These are the steps to be followed:

1. Please connect the computers together with a crossover cable to the ethernet card

2. Set the IP address on the computers. Go to Start {gt} Settings {gt}Control Panel {gt} Network Connections.

3. Look for your Local Area Connection ethernet adapter, right-click and choose properties.

4. Select Internet Protocol TCP/IP and choose properties.

5. Assign the IP address for all the network cards with the same subnet mask.

6. Choose OK then OK/close again.

7. Check the Connection by pinging the other IP address. If you get the reply, then the connectivity is OK. To share your files, please right-click on any folder and choose 'Sharing' to make them shared.

Windows Service Pack installation - Access Denied

No comments:

You may get this "Access denied" error message when installing Windows XP SP2 or Windows Server 2003 SP1. This may happen when the permission for one or more registry keys is not present. This prevents the update of those registry keys. To install the Service Pack, please find the registry key, change the permission and run the Service Pack setup again.

The setupapi.log file in C:\windows by default or in %windir% directory contains logs to troubleshoot installation or setup issues. By default, the registry entries are not written in this log. To include registry information in this file, verbose logging has to be enabled in Windows XP. The procedure to enable verbose logging in Windows XP requires some registry changes. It is always advisable to back up the registry before doing any changes. Please click Start, click run. Type regedit in the open field and click OK. The registry editor will open.

Go to the following location in the registry HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\

Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion \Setup

Locate the LogLevel subkey. Double-click it to edit the subkey. In the "EDIT DWORD value" window, please click Hexadecimal in the Base pane. Type 0000FFFF in the Value data box. Click OK. Close the registry editor and run the setup again. The setupapi.log file will include the registry key. When verbose logging is enabled, the size of setupapi.log grows to approximately 4MB. So after finding the registry keys, reset the DWORD value of LogLevel subkey back to 0.

Run the setup to get the error message. Open the setupapi.log file. Press CTRL+END to go to the end of the file. At the end of the file you can find lines

#-007 Deleting registry key

HKCR\amm.lr.aud

#E033 Error 5: Access is denied.

The line above "access is denied" says which registry key's permission has to be changed. HKCR represents "HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT" and amm.lr.aud in subkey that is located under the registry hive. Update the permissions for that subkey and run the Service Pack SP setup again.

To update the permission, please open the registry editor, locate the registry subkey that you find from the setupapi.log file. Select the key; on the Edit menu click Permissions to open the permissions window for the selected registry subkey. Add full control permissions to Administrators in the permissions window. Click Apply and click Ok. On the file menu, click Exit to exit the registry editor.

Now it should be possible to install the Windows XP SP2 or Windows Server 2003 SP1.

The other option to install the Windows XP SP2 or Windows Server 2003 SP1 is to reset the registry security settings to default. To do this, please click Start, click Run, type cmd and then press Enter.

The command prompt will be opened. Type the following command secedit /configure /cfg %windir%\repair\secsetup.inf /db secsetup.sdb /areas REGKEYS /verbose and press ENTER

You will get a message "Task Completed" and warning message that can be ignored. The log about this command is available in %windir%\Security\Logs\Scesrv.log file

Create your own special characters in Windows XP

1 comment:
Have you ever wanted to create your own font or maybe just a special character—for example, a character showing your initials for approving documents with your “signature”? You can easily create your own characters using a hidden Windows XP tool called the Private Character Editor. Here’s how:
1. Press Windows + R to open the Run dialog box.
2. Type eudcedit in the Open text box and click OK.
3. When the Private Character Editor launches, you’ll see the Select Code dialog box. Click OK.
4. A user interface that looks and works very much like Paint will appear. Here, you can use standard tools to create your characters.
5. When you finish, select the Save Character command on the Edit menu.
Once you save your new character, you can access it using the Character Map tool. Here’s how:
1. Press Windows + R to open the Run dialog box.
2. Type charmap in the Open text box and click OK.
3. When the Character Map appears, select the Font drop-down list and select All Fonts (Private Characters).
4. Select your character, click the Select button, and then click the Copy button.
You can now paste your font character into any document that you want.
